In July 2009 I was suddenly diagnosed with breast cancer. I was 34 and had a five month old baby and four older children aged between 18 months and six and a half. My prognosis was not good, with an 80% chance of not surviving. I didn’t have insurance because I was a home maker and didn’t think I needed it.
I was taken from this role and spun into the health system – some would say illness system. My husband had to step out of his business to take care of the family.
I am grateful to have survived however the impact to us financially was disastrous. I never want to see anyone go through the imminent fear of death and be more concerned about how they are going to feed their children. This is why I do this.
